1) Authentic Assessment Activity

Near the end of this workshop, participants to create to a concise multimedia lecture on "Steps to creating a Professional Microsoft Word Document." This will demonstrate that participants are able to apply the principles and skills they learned in this workshop on using multimedia tools to improve flipped classroom instruction.

2) Presentation
An instructional method is means of "presenting a lesson such as using spoken versus printed text along with an animation" (Mayer, 2009, p. 51). Therefore, a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation saved as a video would be most engaging for participants to learn the basic concepts and skills needed to complete the authentic assessment activity on "Steps to creating a Professional Microsoft Word Document."

3) Graphic Organizer
The following is a graphic organizer to help focus participants’ attention on key points for my presentation. This organizer will help participants to be actively engaged and focused on key elements in the presentation.

4) Pre-training
People learn better when they receive pre-training concerning names and characteristics of key components in advanced learning environments (Mayer, 2009). The concepts that will be provided to participants in this workshop will be complex. Therefore, Pre-training will be needed to effectively provide advanced teaching for my participants. Pre-training will comprise an open forum discussion on names and characteristics of key components in this workshop such as defining and briefly discussing flipped classroom instruction as well as quickly describing what Mayer's triarchic model of 12 design principles are. Participants will also learn how to create and save a PowerPoint Presentation as a video. This will help prepare participants for the authentic assessment near the end of the workshop.

The following is an example of an effective multimedia message. This will be used as part of my pre-training and may also be used by participants as a guide to completing the authentic assessment.

The following website will also be used as part of my pre-training segment for participants to consider different ways to present multimedia messages. This resource may also be used for as a guide for completing the authentic assessment. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/powerpoint-help/turn-your-presentation-into-a-video-HA010336763.aspx

Details

The following is my plan concerning the pre-training, presentation of key concepts/content/skills, a graphic organizer, and an authentic assessment activity for my participants.

1) How will I include Mayer’s principle of active processing in your authentic assessment activity? What kind of product will participants create to demonstrate their learning using multimedia technology?

Near the end of my workshop, I would like participants to create to a concise multimedia lecture on "Steps to creating a Professional Microsoft Word Document." This will demonstrate that my participants are able to apply the principles and skills they learned in my workshop on using multimedia tools to improve flipped classroom instruction by means of active processing. In short, there are two types of active learning behavioral activity (hands on activities that do not guarantee meaningful learning) and cognitive activity – which promotes meaningful learning (Mayer, 2009). The idea here is to create hand on activity which also promotes cognitive activity.

See the video example above that will be used as part of my pre-training and may also be used by participants as a guide to completing the authentic assessment. Also as stated above, the following website will also be used as part of my pre-training segment for participants to consider different ways to present multimedia messages. This resource may also be used for as a guide for completing the authentic assessment. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/powerpoint-help/turn-your-presentation-into-a-video-HA010336763.aspx

2) What kind of multimedia presentation must you create to effectively present key concepts and skills to your participants (video, PowerPoint, podcast, screencast, interactive tutorial, or other)? How will you include Mayer’s principles of dual coding and limited capacity in your presentation?

An Instructional method is a means of "presenting a lesson such as using spoken versus printed text along with an animation" (Mayer, 2009, p. 51). Therefore, a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation saved as a video would be most engaging for participants to learn the basic concepts and skills needed to complete the authentic assessment activity on "Steps to creating a Professional Microsoft Word Document."

Still, a well-designed multimedia instructional message will most likely achieve active cognitive processing within a learner even if the individual appears to be behaviorally inactive (Mayer, 2009). A Microsoft PowerPoint presentation can be used interactively (behavioral activity) or the learner might decide to let the program run automatically. Whether or not the learner is engaged behaviorally by pressing buttons and interacting physically with the program, meaningful learning will depend on how effective the instructional messages are.

3) What kind of graphic organizer would be best to give your participants to help facilitate learning in your workshop?

I will give my participants a table which comprise the main concepts with a section to write down their reflections.

4) What concepts in your presentation will require pre-training before you begin the workshop? How will you use multimedia to engage your learners during the pre-training phase?

People learn better when they receive pre-training concerning names and characteristics of key components in advance learning environments (Mayer, 2009). The concepts provided to participants in my workshop will be complex. Therefore, Pre-training will be needed to effectively provide advanced teaching for my participants. Pre-training will consist of an open forum discussion on names and characteristics of key components in my workshop such as defining and discussing flipped classroom instruction and describing briefly explaining what Mayer's triarchic model of 12 design principles are. Participants will also learn how to create and save a PowerPoint Presentation as a video. This will help prepare participants for the authentic assessment near the end of the workshop.

5) What equipment will you need to conduct your workshop (projector, laptops for each pair of participants, Internet connections, other)?

For my workshop, I will require a computer configured with Microsoft Office 2010, Internet connection, and a projector for presenting the concepts in my workshop to participants. Participants will also need at least one computer per group for the authentic assessment. These computers for participating professors will also require Microsoft Office 2010 and Internet connectivity.

6) What online applications will be used?

Online applications that will be used for my workshop will be Youtube and prezi sites.

7) How will your participants collaborate on their projects? How will you group them to create authentic assessment in your workshop?

Participants will collaborate in teams according to how they are seated. Participants will be seated in groups of about 4-6 individuals per round table. One laptop will be assigned to each table which will save time. Laptops configured with Microsoft Office 2010 will be distributed (1 per team/table) for the authentic assessment on "Steps to creating a Professional Microsoft Word Document."
